The recent events in Palestine cannot be explained without
keeping in mind the Occupation, Israeli politics and the Western
governments' consent or indifference. The drama of the
confrontations between Palestinians comes from the effects of an
implacable Occupation that subjects and punishes the Palestinian
population. The seizure decreed by the Quartet has punished the
victims and supports the Israeli aggressor defying international
legality in every way.
From the different interventions made during the Course,
the conclusion has been reached that the end of the Occupation
should be considered the central element to glimpse a path
toward a fair peace in the area. All the Plans, Roadmaps,
Conferences, etc. that don't start from this principle and don't
try to revert the situation by applying international law, will
only lead to further failure.
The Occupation is part of a meticulously planned Israeli
strategy and it presents different forms and methods: annexation
of territories, expulsion of millions of Palestinian refugees,
locking the population in authentic ghettoes that make the land
they live on nonviable as its own state, the appropriation of
natural resources such as water, etc. This situation has been
increased after the Conference of Madrid and the Agreements of
Oslo, which had taken place under international tutelage. New
colonies have been created in the West Bank, there is an
acceleration of the Judaising of Jerusalem, the building of the
Wall has been carried out, permitting it to reach 850 Km and
accomplishing the isolation or confinement of more than 1.5
million Palestinians in the Gaza open-air prison. None of these
accomplished facts have been criticized nor sanctioned
internationally.
Taking as base the international law of which Israel cannot
remain at the margin, in this Course imparted from 16 to 20 of
July and organised by associations belonging to the Solidarity
Net Against the Occupation of Palestine [1], the following
conclusions were reached:
- The necessity to work in awareness and information
activities highlighting that it is the Occupation the element
that determines the impossibility that a fair peace can exist in
the area and prohibits coexistence among its inhabitants.
- The imperious moral obligation of avoiding more
suffering. For that, it is necessary to mobilise the public
opinion so the governments revise their positions which are
regrettably suitable to the colonial politics and apartheid that
Israel imposes.
- That International Law and the media can be instruments
that facilitate the change of political will that passes over
the partial or accomplice words from our governments to ones
that will put pressure on Israel against actions that contribute
to the maintenance of the Occupation, until the execution of
International Legality will be achieved. Among the measures that
have been appointed are:
Suspension of the Association Agreement between Israel and
the European Union
Not to carry out military exchanges with Israel
Not to finance infrastructures associated with the Wall and
furthering of the Apartheid.
