Jumana El Husseini copies ancient scripts found throughout the Arab
world into her recent work. These paintings have a translucent
quality. El Husseini places layer and layer scripts on top of each
other to create a soft painterly space. Similarly to most Arab
intellectuals, she believes that ancient Egyptians, Canaanites,
Assyrians, Sumerians and others are forbears of the Arabs. In
exploring their writings, she is excavating her own history and
identity.
