All welcome!! Come early for good seats!

For the second year, the Arab Film Festival comes to Stanford. This time with an expanded line-up spanning 2 nights! Among this year's films are two gems of the  Syrian cinema-- the recent "Under the Ceiling" with its portrait of young Syrians and the bleak future which awaits, and the long-banned satirical masterpiece, "Stars in Broad Daylight". They come to us as part of the ArteEast Road to Damascus Syrian Film Retrospective. They will ONLY be showing at Stanford. Also included in the line-up is a fine new Egyptian romantic comedy, "Malek wa-Ketaba", starring a trio of stars-- Hind Sabri, Khaled Abul Nagla, and Mahmoud Hemida. And lastly as the jewel in the crown of our series, we offer the first feature film produced in Iraq since the fall of Saddam-- the amazing "Ahlaam" or "Dreams", directed, written, produced, and shot by Mohamed el-Daradji. It tells the story of a trio of individuals whose lives and minds had been shattered by Saddam's brutal rule. When the asylum in which they had been incarcerated is destroyed during the US conquest of Baghdad, they are freed to face an even more fantastic reality than their own broken dreams. Make plans to see them all!

Hosted by David Giovacchini, Middle East Collection, Stanford University Libraries.
