GENEVA - The United
Nations' main human rights forum expressed concern in late April
that Islam was often
wrongly blamed for being behind crimes and terrorist acts.
The U.N. Commission on
Human Rights adopted a resolution, introduced by Pakistan on
behalf of the
Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), which also voiced
concern that
some media were being
used to incite violence and discrimination against Islam and other
religions.
The
resolution expressed the 53-member commission's "deep concern at
negative stereotyping of religions
"
and its "deep concern that Islam is frequently and wrongly
associated with human rights violations and with terrorism."
It was the first time that the panel
had adopted a text on defamation of religion.
