The massacre of Baldat
al-Shaikh took place in the Haifa Petroleum Refinery on January
31, 1947. A number of
Palestinians died and approximately sixty Jews were killed. The
Zionist planned revenge
after an argument between Palestinian workers and Jewish
workers at the
refinery. They attacked Baldat al-Shaikh and Hawas places where most
of
the workers live.
That night, approximately 150 to 200 men of the First Battalion of
Palmakh and the
Carmelie brigade under
the leadership of Hayim Afinuam. They took be surprise the people
and they started using
hand grenades and machine guns. Sixty of these people died, most
of them children, women
and old people. The attack lasted for an hour, after which the
Zionists withdrew at
2:00 A.M.
