Belgium senators who
support the victims of Sabra and Shatilla denounced torture inKhiam
prison by Israel in South Lebanon.
Khiam was a prison where
thousands of Arab prisoners were held and tortured for years. This
prison was considered by mostLebanese as a symbol of Israeli
oppression. Many Human Right Groups across the world had repeatedly
denounced the prison and the cases of rape, abuse and torturethat
took place there.
Khiam prison was used by
Israel to jail people suspected of challenging the Israeli
occupation of South Lebanon, which lasted for 22-years.
Three senators who are
members of a Belgian parliamentary committee arrived in Beirut to
provide information on the Sabra and Shatilla massacre and collect
money for lawyers
representing the 23
survivors or families of victims.
The torture, which took
place in a row of interrogations rooms, would being beatings, being
prodded with live
electrical cable in sensitive parts of the body, and hung from
painful
positions.
Al-Khiam Detention
Center was opened in 1985. It was originally built by the French
Occupation forces in
1930s.
The jail is now empty
and a flag of the Lebanese Hezbollah is posted at the gates but the
lsuffering and the
feelings of many innocent prisoners are inside those walls.
