Peace Talks were Cancelled by Amineh Ishtay
Peace Proposals
The attacks to the United States
will not help at all to re-establish conversations between
Israelis and Palestinians and now more than ever exit the doubt
whether peace could be achieved among Jews and Palestinians.
The situation in the occupied territories is frighteningly close
to war. Palestinians want Israel to retreat to its pre-1967
borders and give the West Bank, Jerusalem and Gaza Strip.
As well, the return of the Palestinian refugees to their land or
the compensation to those
who don’t want to return and the
most contentious issue that is “Jerusalem”. Both sides
consider Jerusalem as their own
holy capital.
After several talks there is nothing concrete, the peace talks
are now a distant prospect.
On the other hand, the
Palestinians say Israel is stepping up military actions when
international attention is focused now on the attacks in US.
The talks were cancelled and since Saturday, Israel launched a
wave of land, sea and air
strikes against Palestinian
positions.
Yasser Arafat said that this is an attempt to “sabotage” the
much-anticipated talks with
Peres.
The last Friday (Sept 15) Sharon called off the talks saying
that they would be “inappropriate” after the terrorist attacks
in US.
