The Real
History of Peace between Arabs and Israel
*MYTH: All Israel wants is to live in Peace. But the Arabs want
to push us into the sea.
*Reality: IN 1977 the PLO offered Israel a full peace treaty.
Israel said No.
*Later in 1977 the US and Russia got together and issued a joint
peace proposal.
The PLO accepted it [Oct 77] but the Israelis griped until the
US dropped it.
• Nov 1978 Arafat told Rep Paul Findley he wanted to talk peace
with the US. Afatat’s statement “The PLO will accept an
independent Palestinian state consisting of the West Bank and
Gaza, with connecting corridor, and in that circumstances will
renounce any and all violent means to enlarge the territory of
that state. I would reserve the right, of course, to use
nonviolent means, that is to say diplomatic and democratic
means, to bring about the eventual unification of all Palestine.
“We will give de facto recognition to the State of Israel. The
Israelis ignored him. Arafat offered Israel everything they said
they wanted… and they wouldn’t even talk to him.
• In 1982 Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria and Jordan all offered
peace. Israel ignored them.
