Jordan cautions UN on situation in Palestinian territories
UN Resolutions and Palestine
Peace Proposals
New York (Petra) — HRH
Prince Zeid Ben Raed, Jordan's permanent representative to the
UN, has reiterated Jordan's support for Palestinian President
Yasser Arafat and the Palestinian people in their endeavour to
attain their legitimate rights and establish an independent
state on their national soil with Jerusalem as its capital.
In an address to the
UN Security Council on Wednesday, Prince Zeid said Israel's
aggression on the Palestinian people, the PNA and its
institutions and infrastructure only succeed in further
deteriorating the situation.
Jordan was granted
permission by the 15-member Security Council, to address the
group during an open debate on the Middle East.
He said measures such
as targeted assassinations, house demolitions and economic and
physical blockades of Palestinian cities and villages, all
flagrant breaches of signed agreements and international law,
will not provide safety and security to the Israeli government
and the people of Israel.
Prince Zeid also
denounced the killing of civilians on both sides, adding that
solving the conflict should be based on the idea of peaceful
coexistence between the Palestinians and Israelis.
In his
address, Prince Zeid reiterated Jordan's support for a recent
Saudi peace proposal.
Saudi
Arabia's Crown Prince Abdullah proposed the establishment of
full diplomatic ties between Arab states and Israel if Israel
withdraws from lands it has occupied since the 1967 Middle East
War.
Prince Zeid urged the
Security Council to shoulder its responsibilities and demand
that Israel immediately and fully withdraw from the PNA areas it
has reoccupied and provide protection to the Palestinian people
in accordance with Security Council resolutions and the 1949
Geneva Convention for the protection of civilians under
occupation.
