A conference was
organized by the Amman-based Orthodox Central Council (OCC) on
August 26, 2002.
Questions related to the
fate of Orthodox Church property in Palestinian territories was one
of the issues Orthodox
leaders discussed at the conference. The conference examined
ways to force the church
leadership in Jerusalem to implement Article 27 of a 1958
Jordanian law on the
inclusion of Arab priests in the church’s council. It also addressed
the
appointment of Arab
bishops and the improvement of Orthodox community services on
both banks of the River
Jordan.
Recent reports about
Israeli pressures on Orthodox Patriarch Irenios I to sell or lease
church-owned land and
other property to Israeli organizations was on the agenda too.
The conference called to
Patriarch Irenios I an the Orthodox Church leadership to play a
national role in
defending the Palestinian people’s land and not to succumb to any
Israeli
pressure in that regard.
