A new policy was created
by the Israeli government. This time is a policy of confiscation of
church land. The Israeli
army plans to cut in two 36-acre Baron Der Site, a place of refugee
and worship for the
Patriarchate since the 1600s. Israeli officials plan to seize the
property
and build a road and
security fence through the middle of the land, cutting it into two
useless
parcels. The Patriarch
tried to stop it but he couldn’t.
According to army
officials the seizure is irreversible and the construction of the
road will
begin in the near
future. Seizing the land will cause a financial burden for the
Patriarchate,
which receives some
income through the sale of olives and olive oil from the property’s
1,600 ancient olive
trees.
