The Prayer Rugs are
masterpieces and are essential in Islamic life.
Muslims are required to
perform five prayers and they have to perform it on a clean
protective covering laid
on the ground. These rugs are typically 2-4ft wide and 4-8ft long.
A worshipper uses the rug to kneel in prayer.
Once he or she completed
the prayer, the rug is then rolled up and put away until next time.
Prayer rugs are small in
seize ( 3’ x 5’), but certain prayer rugs are meant to accommodate
more than one person.
Prayer rugs are produced
in central and Western Asia and the largest producer of prayer
rugs was Asia Minor.
They (prayer rugs) are
often adorned with special religious motifs and prayers written in
local scripts. Some
include a lamp hanging from the arch of whose light symbolized the
presence of Allah. It
may include handprints or a pair of feet shown on the rug to mark
the
place of the worshipper
as a sort of guide in prayer. As well as, water jugs and combs.
Some rugs contain a
mini-bar, from which the Quran is read.
Islam spread its prayer
rugs from around 825 AD.
