Jalal Al-Rifai born in
Ramallah Palestine. He is considered by Arab and local intellectuals
as one of the few
cartoonists who succeeded in tapping the pulse of the street in the
Arab
world. He graduated in
design, layout and caricature from London.
Through his cartoons
Jalal Al-Rifai criticized favoritism, wasta, and malpractice in the
public
sector, unemployment and
poverty.
Al-Rifai received the
Ali and Ottoman Journalistic Caricature Award in 1995. From the
beginning of his career
he started working for Ad-Dustour Arabic Newspaper.
Writing in Ad Dustour,
he spoke of the injustices and indeed, Jewish usurpation of all that
is
holy for Muslims and
Christians In 1997, the Israeli
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu charged Jalal Rifai’s caricature saying they were
anti-Jewish, racist and anti-Semitic.
"They presented a
collection of my work to the Human Rights Organization, accusing me
of
anti-Semitism," said Al
Rifai. But he rejected such allegations.
The racism that
Netanyahu accuses Jalal Rifai of is constantly practiced on the
streets by
his Israeli soldiers, he
said.
