  • Eulogy for a Jerusalemite by  Khaled Nusseibeh

A somber shadow seizes the family
As though a dark cloud making all morose

A grievous loss of the saintly man Hisham
A paragon of integrity and compassion

With a humble disposition humbling the haughtiest
With pain repressed affording all an affable countenance

Struggling, with a noble, stoic character, to survive
In a world replete with imperfection

Overcoming the inadequate with radiant poise
A man genuinely respecting of the smallest and greatest

Tolerant of human frailty- whatever the extent
Placing a positive face to imperfect conduct

Pained by dispersal and unfulfilled expectation
But enduring with outstanding forbearance and optimism

Combining, as though a radiant tree, the finest of West and East
With the profoundest commitment to Islam’s norms

With tolerance compassion and a questioning mind
Embracing a truth with yearning for redemption

An aesthete that keenly generates beauty
In architecture harmoniously embodying comfort and the simple

Nobly willing, with a proud heart, to serve and respect
Weaving threads of harmony within the kinship net

A long distance walker who carried Palestine’s anguished soul
Encountering setback with radiant hope

Anchoring life’s uneven paths on the carpets of mosques
Prolonged prostrations and supplications that God answers

And to glorify God without beginning or end
The light of the heavens and the earth

Ailment finally claimed a tenacious man
A builder in the lands of the beloved twin- Palestine and Jordan

One who likewise formed a splendid family
Sons of Jerusalem’s clans

The man, the builder, the reformer, the aesthete
Many are in painful bereavement at the loss

Husseinis, Nashashibis, Nusseibehs, Tuqan and Abu Ghosh
All in supplication for the departed

The faithful congregated for the Friday prayers
At the Um Yahya Mosque in Um Uthaina

Funeral prayers were solemnly performed
And the body transported to the cemetery

A sad convoy moved in the direction of Western Amman
Reaching a venue in the verdant hills

Numerous friends and relatives expressed condolences
On a cool windy day

May paradise be your future abode
And heaven your final resting place

Indeed life is but a transient moment
Continually bidding farewell to its travelers

And farewell to one of life’s noble men
Lost but never forgotten
