Eid Al Fitr is
celebrated on the first day of Shawaal, the tenth month in the
Muslim calendar,
to mark in the end of a
month long fast during the month of Ramadan.
Ramadan is a holy month
for Muslims because this was the month during which God
transmitted the divine
revelations of the Holy Quran to him.
Eid Al Fitr is a day of
joy and thanksgiving, nevertheless, in Jerusalem and in Palestine
will be
a sad occasion. It will
be a day to remember those who are not anymore here, those who died
as martyrs. Normally, in this day Muslims show their joy for the
health, strength and the
opportunities Allah and
life give us.
In Eid Al Fitr people
visit each other and these visits always include coffee and special
baked
sweets filled with dates
and nuts.
Usually, when someone
dies they just offer coffee. If the person who died is considered as
a
martyr they will offer
sweets.
In this day they wear
their nicest clothing and attend the prayer that is followed by a
short
sermon.
Children are the ones
who really enjoy the festivity. They receive gifts, and sweets on
this
happy occasion.
On the Eid who can
afford to offer domestic animals [sheep] as a symbol of Ibrahim’s
sacrifice
does it.
After they finish with
some of the visits they gather and have lunch together. The Eid has
a
special aspect that is
charity, which all Muslims are expected to extend to the needy.
From the Jerusalem Forum
we wish you a Happy Eid and to all Muslims in the world. May
this Eid happiness and
peace.
