  • Jerusalem the Palestinian Capital  by Amineh Ishtay

When we talk about Jerusalem we talk about Jerusalem in 1947, together with the

neighbouring towns included the municipal boundaries in 1948. As well as 32 villages

and towns, which have been demolished.

Jerusalem is related to the land of Palestine, to the Muslims and Christians, to their

holy places, to their beliefs, and to the Palestinian people. When I say to Muslims and

Christians I said it because the Christians are not an ethnic minority as many people

think, they are a major component of the Palestinian population.

Jerusalem is the capital of Palestine; it is the symbol of the inalienable rights of the

Palestinian people.

A population cannot be separated from the sovereign forms for which it yearns.

Before the 1967 war, West Jerusalem covered 53 square kilometers and had 195,000

inhabitants.

East Jerusalem covered six square kilometers with 75,000 inhabitants. Nowadays, 28

Israeli settlements have been added to the city and there are 330,000 Israelis in West

Jerusalem, and 160,000 Palestinians in East Jerusalem. The Israeli government

Eradicated he Palestinian population 1967-71 and 1980-81 and in 1995.

The maps of the city have been change and develop over the years. There are Palestinian

villages and towns that don’t appear on the map.

Following the 1967 war, the Arab municipality of East Jerusalem was dissolved by force

and was annexed it to the Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem. During that year, more

than one third of the land in East Jerusalem has been expropriated by the Israeli

government.

Under international law or any international resolution no country can annex territory by

force. The entire world has never recognized the unilateral annexation of East Jerusalem

by Israel.

Jerusalem’s  roots go back 5,000 years to the time when the city of Arab Yabous was

founded. Jerusalem is a historic city of culture, heritage, with singular monuments. Is very

visible the ruins of public buildings from the Roman, Byzantine times. We can find as well

Muslims mosques and tombs of saints and Crusaders fortresses.

Jerusalem is a city of Arab-Islamic and Christian heritage.
