   Impressions of Palestinian Women
  • Palestinian Women Martyrs

Forty-seven Palestinian women were killed during the period (1967 - 1983). They were

victims of war. This number indicates that 44.6 per cent of the martyrs where killed while

defending their lives. The causes of this killing are:

The state of defense is defined here in the following condition (A) while being terrorized out

of one's place, (B) while attempting to cross the bridge, (C) while a neighborhood has been

demolished, and (D) while the Israeli force is breaking in ones territories.

The per cent of women who were martyred in a fida'I operation is 4.3% and this indicates

that women participation in armed struggle is extremely limited. Yet this fact means that

women are moved to take part in liberating their own country showing that oppression had

reached a high level of intensity.

A fact is that Palestinian women security status is under attack, the 25 per cent of martyrs

were killed in demonstrations. They were deprived from the right to even voice their opinion.

Freedom is a rare condition under occupation. Palestinian women like other women of the

Third World countries living under emergency conditions are forced to be part in the struggle

to survive. They are much than just observers, because they are hit directly by adverse

conditions to their basic needs. Their supporters, fathers, brothers, sons, husbands are

facing constant threat of being jailed or killed.

There are cases where you find a Palestinian under town-arrest and his brother/ sister or

husband/ wife is deported. It is a common scene to see families dispersed and stories on

human suffering in relation to "significant events" in a family life are insufferable. Significant

events are either death of a father where the sons cannot cross the bridge to attend the

funeral.
